About this destination
HOW TO GET THERE
By Air
To reach the various tourist destinations in the Natuna Islands, you must first fly to either Hang Nadim Airport in Batam or Raja Haji Fisabilillah International Airport in Tanjung Pinang (Bintan Island). From there, you will take a connecting flight to Ranai Airport in the Natuna Islands. The flight from Batam or Bintan to the islands takes approximately one hour. A one-way ticket costs between IDR 900,000 and IDR 1.3 million. As flights to the islands are frequently fully booked, it is highly recommended that you plan your trip and book your tickets well in advance.
Currently, flights to the islands from Batam are operated by two private national airlines: Wings Air, which flies four times a week (Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays), and Sriwijaya Air, which flies three times a week (Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays). Wings Air, which utilizes ATR 72 aircraft, plans to increase its frequency to seven flights per week, depending on demand.
Additionally, Nusantara Air Charter operates flights to Natuna from Raja Haji Fisabilillah Airport in Tanjung Pinang three times a week—on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays.
By Sea
Sea travel is the primary mode of transportation for the people of Natuna. If you are traveling from Java, you can reach Natuna by taking the KM Bukit Raya, a vessel operated by PT Pelni. There are two available routes; the first departs from Tanjung Priok in Jakarta, following the route: Tanjung Priok – Belinyu (Bangka Belitung) – Kijang (Bintan, Riau Islands) – Jemaja – Siantan (Anambas, Riau Islands) – Natuna. This journey takes 4 days and 3 nights, with departures from Tanjung Priok scheduled for Thursdays. The second route originates from East Java, specifically from the Tanjung Perak port in Surabaya. The route follows this path: Tanjung Perak (Surabaya) – Pontianak (West Kalimantan) – Serasan – Midai – Natuna. The travel time is roughly the same as the journey from Tanjung Priok—approximately 4 days and 4 nights. Departures from Tanjung Perak typically take place on Sunday evenings. Please check the schedule.
Ticket prices for a one-way trip on the *KM Bukit Raya* vary depending on the point of departure. A ticket from Tanjung Priok to Natuna costs no more than 500,000 IDR; the fare from Tanjung Perak to Natuna is similarly priced. Alternatively, a more budget-friendly sea travel option is to take a "pioneer ship" (*kapal perintis*) from the port of Tanjung Pinang and/or Pontianak toward Natuna.
BEST TIME TO VISIT
The best time to visit the island is during the dry season, specifically between July and September. The hot, sunny weather is perfect for taking in the scenery of these exotic tropical beaches.
LOCAL LANGUAGE
The Riau Islands are home to at least four distinct Malay dialects. These include the Natuna, Anambas, and Senayang dialects, as well as *Bahasa Melayu Dagang* (a trade-oriented Malay dialect). Malay is the most widely spoken language on the island.
